Project Description
Originally built in the early 1900s, Huntley Hall is on the campus of Virginia Union University (campus on National Historic Registry). It has served as a historic architectural campus focal point and residence hall to all male incoming freshman since the school’s inception. In order to stay competitive with various peer institutions in the Commonwealth, RMT Construction & Development Group was contracted to convert the existing double-loaded corridor and gang bathroom configuration into suite-style accommodations while utilizing the nationally adopted “Living/Learning Model”. RMT performed significant interior renovations include major repairs to the 64-dorm room building, complete renovations of the common shower / bathrooms and common area renovations including new flooring, ceiling, and wall finishes.
As a part of the renovations, the existing slate roof was replaced with a synthetic slate roof system, in keeping with the historic context of the structure and other campus features. Additionally, the project consisted of providing a more energy efficient HVAC system, new chiller system and new plumbing, electrical and IT infrastructure upgrades. Other significant renovations included a complete upgrade to the building’s life safety systems. The once shuttered historic building is now ready for full occupancy for students attending the HBCU in the heart of Richmond, VA
